The City of Bonita Springs continues to Monitor Hurricane Helene

Bonita Springs, Sept. 25, 2024 – The City of Bonita Springs continues to monitor Hurricane Helene. Due to the potential impacts of the impending storm, the City of Bonita Springs has declared a State of Local Emergency. A tropical storm warning has been issued for Bonita Springs. The National Weather Service is anticipating that we will receive tropical force winds and storm surge in our area. Please secure all building materials onsite. Please continue to monitor the National Weather Service, local media outlets, and the National Hurricane Center.

Lee County is opening two Safe Havens for anyone who does not feel secure in their housing situation and does not have a safe place to ride out the storm. These locations are not shelters and individuals are encouraged to pursue more comfortable options, such as staying with family or friends.

Safe Havens will open at 3 p.m. at the North Fort Myers Recreation Center and the Estero Recreation Center. LeeTran will adjust operations to provide service to these locations through 10 p.m. Please note that all other fixed-route bus operations will be suspended at 7 p.m. today and are expected to resume on Friday. Visit https://ow.ly/mgL650Tvrqo for more information.

Lee County will suspend residential garbage, yard waste, and recycling collection on Thursday due to winds anticipated from the storm. Regular household collections will be delayed by one day for the remainder of the week. Thursday’s collections will be picked up Friday, and Friday’s collections will be picked up Saturday. Collections will resume as normal on Monday, Sept. 30. The county asks residents to please remove anything outside their homes that could blow away during the storm, and remove from the curb, garbage cans, lids and recycle carts. Please store them inside.

City staff are working to prepare city facilities and operations. Bonita Springs Community Development asks that any Bonita Springs residents with water intrusion in their homes post-storm send an email to [email protected] or call 239-444-6150 for assistance with permit requirements and resources.
