Bonita Springs was notified that FEMA will maintain Bonita Springs rating and National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) policyholder discounts following months of diligent work by the city to provide all requested and required documentation. FEMA determined Bonita Springs residents with policies issued under the NFIP will maintain the discount rate of 25%. The City of Bonita Springs has enjoyed a great working relationship with FEMA.

The City of Bonita Springs Will Host a Public Meeting for the West Terry Street Improvements Project

The City of Bonita Springs West Terry Street Improvements Project is underway. This initiative creates a new sidewalk along the south side of West Terry Street, extending from US 41 (Tamiami Trail) to Old 41 Road. The proposed project aims to enhance pedestrian safety and accessibility by providing a continuous pedestrian path on the south side of the corridor. The new design will also incorporate a closed drainage system with curb and gutter to efficiently manage stormwater.

The National Weather Service is anticipating that we will receive hurricane force winds and storm surge in our area from five-ten feet. The city urges you to complete your hurricane preparedness plan. A Hurricane Watch means hurricane-force winds are possible somewhere within this area within the next 48 hours. A Storm Surge Watch means life-threatening inundation, from rising water moving inland from the coastline, is possible somewhere within this area within the next 48 hours. Please secure all building materials onsite. Please continue to monitor local news stations for updates on the storm. The City is working with the Lee County Emergency Operations Center, Lee County Sheriff’s Office, Bonita Springs Fire Control and Rescue District and other partners to prepare. City staff has been clearing storm drains and securing facilities in preparation of Hurricane Milton.

Earlier this year, the City completed its State-required Evaluation and Appraisal Review (EAR) of the City’s Comprehensive Plan. The purpose of the EAR process, which occurs every seven years, is to determine whether plan amendments are necessary to reflect changes in state requirements during the cycle.

On February 2, 2022, Council approved a Professional Services Agreement with Stantec Consulting Inc. to design a Wayfinding Signage and Gateway Feature Master Plan for the City. Similar to the City’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan, this master plan will create a road map for future capital improvement project recommendations.

Hurricane Ian Progress Report

On September 28, 2022, Hurricane Ian made landfall as a direct hit to Lee County as a Category 5 storm. It was the largest hurricane to make landfall here and is the fifth largest storm in U.S. history. The City of Bonita Springs experienced over 12+ feet of storm surge and sustained winds of over 155 mph. Hurricane Ian impacted all City parks, our beaches, and various City-owned infrastructure.
