About Storm Debris

Storm debris is collected separately from household garbage. Storm debris assessment is already underway throughout the county collections will begin in the next few days, giving residents time to get storm debris to the curb.

Debris Removal

Click Here to view guidelines so that work crews can quickly and efficiently remove storm debris from your property.
• Most Important – Please set storm debris at the curb away from your normal household trash and recycling; it will be collected and documented separately.
• Place storm debris at the curb in three separate piles: garbage, yard waste and building debris. Federal Emergency Management Agency rules require documentation of the volume and type of debris collected to reimburse the county for storm cleanup.
• Garbage must be placed in a 40-gallon can or heavy mil plastic bag each weighing no more than 50 pounds. If you have a larger county-provided container for automated garbage collection, you may use that as well.
• Yard waste does not need to be bundled after the storm. Place it in piles that can easily be managed by collection personnel with a claw truck.
• To expedite collection, do not place anything beneath low-hanging obstacles like trees or power lines or near things like fire hydrants or mailboxes.
• Food must be removed from any appliance set at the curb. Inedible food should be placed with the garbage.

For private or gated communities-

FEMA regulations require that private or gated communities have a current Right of Entry and Indemnification form on file with the City of Bonita Springs before any disaster debris recovery crews are allowed to enter the community. Click hereto download the form, then email the form to public works- [email protected].

If you are unsure if your community has a current Right of Entry form on file, please have your community association manager or home-owner association president email public works- [email protected] .

Storm recovery status is updated on the city website www.cityofbonitasprings.org. Regular updates can also be found at the City of Bonita Springs Facebook page.

Questions, please visit our Hurricane Ian page.

Update on Curfew

City Wide Curfew: City wide curfew is rescinded.

Bonita Beach Area Curfew: Until further notice the curfew is 12AM-6AM.

Take precautions after the storm has passed. Damage to your home can be extensive. Relief supplies may take several days to arrive. Try to remain calm during this potentially emotional time.

Keep these tips in mind:
• Only call 911 for life-threatening situations.
• Have a valid form of identification if needed for re-entry.
• Call utility companies to report hazards, such as broken glass or water mains, downed power lines, or overturned gas tanks.
• Avoid downed wires and standing water.
• Stay tuned to local media for re-entry information.
• Turn off the main breaker to your house.
• Report suspicious contractors or unfairly high prices to authorities.
• Repair open holes in your roof.
• Photograph and take notes of all damages and make any necessary temporary repairs.
• Be careful around wild & domestic animals. Even if you know an animal it may be frightened or injured & could be dangerous.
• If it is necessary to drive, avoid weakened roads, bridges, or tree limbs that could collapse unexpectedly.
• Ask for a contractor's valid county contractor's license. Do not sign a contract if they are unlicensed or pay for services until the work is complete.

The Florida Division of Emergency Management will receive the requests and they will be assigned to the appropriate contractor for action.

Imperial River
The City of Bonita Springs continues to advise residents near rivers and canals to keep an eye on the water levels. There is not a mandatory evacuation at this time, however, should the levels increase, residents in flood-prone areas should take precautions.
Sheet flow, which is a natural phenomenon after a hurricane, can cause rivers and canals to rise. The Imperial River has slowly risen since Hurricane Ian. Residents can access the USGS Daily Data for Florida National Water Information System webpage to check levels of the Imperial River here.

Shelters

Lee County is consolidating its shelter operations as the shelter population shifts during recovery efforts. The remaining shelters still have space for people in need. For more information, please visit leegov.com/storm.
Hurricane Ian Clean up- Separating Your Debris

As you begin to clean up your property, remember to separate your storm debris. Please set storm debris at the curb away from your normal household trash and recycling; it will be collected and documented separately. For more information, visit leegov.com/storm.
